Applaud President Obama's Executive Action On Gun Responsibility
In the face of a Congress that refuses to do anything to remedy the epidemic of gun violence in America, President Obama today announced he was taking executive action to require that,

"Anybody in the business of selling firearms must get a license and conduct background checks."

Not only is this clearly within the rule-making authority of the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives), who could possibly have a problem with that?

Law-abiding citizens who can pass a background check can still buy the same guns they could before. It is only the non-law-abiders who are trying to evade background checks who would be affected. Would anybody seriously stand up for a right of people who are actually in the business of being gun dealers to pretend they are not?

The last time we had a Republican president he issued sweeping executive orders every day of the week and twice on Sunday, while they preached to us about the so-called "unitary" executive. If President Obama does not have the constitutional power to do what he has done today, it would be to deny him any constitutional power whatsoever.

Moreover, when various presidential candidates assert they would immediately reverse this executive action if they were elected, that itself stands as a confession that the president can take executive action on this, one way or another.

We applaud President Obama's courage and initiative on this, and call on Congress to not only fully support him in this, but to further do the other things urgently needed, which perhaps only Congress can do, for example to keep people on the no fly list from obtaining weapons of terror.
