The Medicare Option: Let Medicare BE The Public Option
There IS an option that could redeem even the Senate health insurance bill in consideration, presuming we get an iron clad commitment up front that it will be done. And that is to provide that people younger than 65 should be permitted the OPTION of buying into Medicare.
This is a simple, common sense idea that nobody could justifiably oppose. Instead of cutting Medicare, which is the most economical and efficient health care program in the country, why not bring more money into Medicare and strengthen it, by giving the American people the freedom to make THAT one of their choices, regardless of any other bill that passes?
The only real public option has always been and remains Medicare. We say let "The Medicare Option" BE the public option.
